Seeing Dr. Seuss at Aldi's.

I'd come to the grocery for three things: figs, ice cream, and oranges.

I don't recognize him;
I don't believe I know what he looks like.
But as I follow in his wake,
finding the canned goods rearranged:
the peas next to the bees
the corn next to the horn
the Brussels sprouts next to the tussling trouts,
I start to suspect.

I'm baffled by the cans of bees and trout,
not to mention—a horn in a can?
From the picture on the label, it's not a normal horn at all, it has bunches of curlicues and three bells at the end.

Then I see the tall cat with the can opener
and the next thing I know, there are bees everywhere!
And the trout are out
and wrestling around
flopping on the ground.

And from the next aisle over comes a big orange fuzzy thing that isn't a cat,
with a toes like a sloth,
a long neck like a giraffe,
and three tails—one of them purple, two of them green.
He's a Braggliscree, and he's juggling a whole rainbow of fuzzy little Pooglooches
that are shrieking and squeaking and tweeting and chirping.

Then, from nowhere at all, in stomps an ephelant
(not ripe, he was green)
on his back a bird a color I've never seen.
That bird had enough feathers for three birds—
Or four!
And the bird began singing,
and the ephelant flinging
confetti and candy
all over the floor!

Strange fish entreated,
Incantations were heard,
turtles piled to the ceiling,
and in through the windows flew ever more birds!

The whole place was a circus,
there were zebras with spots,
a kangaroo with antlers,
a muskrat with dots,
a leopard with stripes.
and somewhere, something was playing that weird fancy horn—
I think that it might have been a blue Quaatz!

The employees started dancing to the tune of the horn,
they put socks on the lox
and gloves on the loaves (sorry),
all the time saying just how lucky they are!

And that's how it happened, following Seuss 'round the store.
I left empty-handed; I couldn't take any more.
I drove home quite tired, I couldn't hold up my head
So when I got there, I just went to bed.

That's also when I started shopping at Safeway.
Even the corn and peas and Brussels sprouts were acting odd.
