The Chaos Army Seems Suspiciously Well-Organized.*

When last we spoke, they had just changed the distribution list again.

The next change to the distribution list moved Central back to the top of the list every single day of the week, but it kept some medium-sized branches higher on the list than they would have fallen, leaving me with the same problem I had before, plus another annoyance.

I believe I mentioned that when this all started, Central tags weren't filed in the boxes with the rest of the tags. They were kept in a couple of small boxes down near the totes themselves. Once we went back to Central being the first everyday, I rearranged the tags (there were a couple of other minor changes), removed the CEN dividers, and put all the Central tags back into the two small boxes.

Only to find them haphazardly put back in the front.

I'm really to the point where I'd like to give this task to whoever it is who feels they can do it better than I do.

So for about a month I started my mornings putting Central tags back where they belonged, and eventually whoever-it-was got the message.

And a couple of weeks ago I started a new system. Instead of having the number of cards decided by the size of branch, I've started going by how high the branch is on the list. When they're high on the list, medium-sized branches will get a big number of tags.

If you're thinking this doesn't really solve the problem of having to start fresh every time the tags run low, you're right. That's why there's a part two. Periodically (and I don't yet know how often this will be), I'll be adding a X, Y, and Z number of tags.

I've had this idea for quite a while. I only tried implementing it once, and it didn't work because the flow of tags was out of whack. If I can get the first part right, the second part should work and recounting and starting over should be made unnecessary.

And that's important, because the new system makes prepping things ahead of time difficult. Before I could just take an afternoon, count out whatever cards I'd accumulated, rubber band them into stacks of the correct number, and have some things ready when I restocked. But if the numbers aren't the same for every day—and they aren't—that means having to count, rubber band, and add notes. It's a tiny fucking cog, there shouldn't be this many steps to keeping it turning.

Once I finish this, once I have a working system, my plan is to hand the whole thing back to my boss and ask her if she will please get someone else to do it. Because no matter how well the system works—well, as they say, It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious. And it seems like it's always—and only—the fools who interfere and muck about in tasks they have not been assigned. It's kind of amazing, since they're the same people who endlessly complain about all the things they have to do.

Oh, and I do plan on writing about the other boring stuff I do. It's good exercise. It is possible to write entertainingly about dull things, though that's probably not what I'm doing here.
