A poem to ease the winter darkness

When the Shadows Tilt the Other Way

The longest of the dark days of winter passes
and incrementally, the slant of sunlight changes.
And so spring begins.

The forsythia hold their breath, waiting to leap out like guests at a surprise party, and
the lilacs' hearts beat just a little faster, and
deep and cold where we can't see, the violets and crocus make plans to run amok.
